Haverford School opens Inter-Ac with win

Posted Saturday, October 17, 2009 by Philadelphia Inquirer

Like Carl Walrath.

Walrath, a junior, has already verbally committed to one of the nation's top lacrosse programs at the University of Virginia. But that hasn't stopped him and other lacrosse players from going both ways for the Fords' football team this season.

"To have this core group of guys, it's now almost become, 'Hey, it's an OK thing. You can play football at Haverford School at a high level and still go to Virginia or Johns Hopkins for lacrosse,'" Murphy said. "We're excited about that."

And the Fords are excited about a 1-0 start in Inter-Ac League play following a 47-12 stomping of Germantown Academy yesterday. Walrath rushed for 184 yards with two scores and also returned an interception 72 yards for a touchdown.

"It's a great feeling," Walrath said.

Haverford School (5-2, 1-0) hasn't won an Inter-Ac title in 38 years. With perennial power Malvern Prep having a down season, the league is up for grabs.

When Murphy took over in 2005, the Fords hadn't won an Inter-Ac game in three years. Last season, Haverford School finished 7-3 overall and tied for second place in the league behind Malvern.

Murphy said his current team has nine players who could play Division I lacrosse.

"They bought in and they're talented, talented kids," Murphy said. "It's a great thing to have them."

Walrath fumbled on the opening drive of the game, but the next time he touched the ball, he took it 95 yards for the touchdown. He added another 5-yard touchdown run and the Fords led at halftime, 28-6.

Germantown Academy (2-3, 0-1) has lost nine straight Inter-Ac games dating back to 2007.

Haverford School was once at that point but Murphy has begun attracting the players he needs to win.

"For those guys to make that commitment - and not only make it - but to really come out and pour their heart and soul into it, playing both ways," Murphy said, "it was what we talked about when I took this job."
